A Cumbria based charity has explained how the proposed ban to disposable vapes will not be enough on its own.

The team at CADAS (Cumbria Addictions: Advice and Solutions) have come out in support of the ban but have taken the opportunity to once again campaign for further vaping education in school curriculums.

The proposed ban, which is part of government plans to tackle the rising number of young people starting to vape, is expected to be introduced next year.

Leigh Williams, CEO of CADAS, said: "It’s great news to hear about the banning of disposable vapes - however, teaching staff cannot take their foot off the gas as banning single-use vapes will not stop the tsunami of vaping among our young people in schools.

"We want schools to work in partnership with CADAS to build vaping education into their curriculum for the next decade to make real sustained change.”

Restrictions will also be introduced to prevent vapes being marketed at children and stop underage sales.

This follows figures which show the number of children vaping has tripled in the last three years.

Simon Fell, the MP for Barrow and Furness, has also come out in support of the legislation.

He said: "I’m no fan of banning things but it’s clear to me that disposable vapes with flavours and colours designed to be attractive to children are driving a very worrying increase in the number of young people taking up the habit.

"I believe that there is a place for vaping in helping to get people off smoking and vapes have demonstrably worked to that effect, but this is about striking the right balance: protecting young people, reducing the environmental impact, and getting vaping back to what it should be – a route away from smoking."

In terms of educational changes, schools interested in specialist sessions are encouraged to contact Hollie Wainwright, CADAS' Schools Liaison Coordinator.

She outlined: "We truly believe education is essential and with the support of schools, together we can help to make a difference.”
