A school is sourcing new books for its unique vending machine after receiving a generous donation.

Newbarns Primary in Barrow has received a £1,000 donation for the new books.

Local councillor and school governor, Les Hall, contributed his year's ward allowance to help fund more reading material for the pupils.

The cash will be used to add to the selection of titles in the school's book vending machine, located in the library.

The initiative rewards pupils with tokens for class work, which they can 'buy' books with to keep.

Sci-fi enthusiast Mr Hall, who represents Hawcoat and Newbarns on Westmorland and Furness Council, said: "I’m an avid reader and when I saw one of the council’s aims was to increase literacy I decided to donate my ward allowance to the school for books.

"The vending machine is a great idea to keep the pupils interested in books throughout school and I’m happy to support."

Headteacher Gary Birkett expressed gratitude for the generous contribution.

He said: "This is a fantastic donation and we will be using it to increase the number of books available to our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.
