A group of 4x4 lovers are getting ready for the relaunch of their new business after their first year in business.

The Dalton 4x4 Offroad group provides access to an off-road course to test any driver who wants to try their luck.

After starting in 2023, the group will be making their return on February 3, with weekend sessions happening once a month up until December.

Nigel Simpson, the man behind the idea, said: "I found that as well as some of the great views that the UK green lanes have to offer, it was the technical challenges that I enjoyed the most.

"Testing my 4×4 offroad driving skills and our vehicle’s capabilities was really exciting and when I planned routes I was always on the lookout for green lanes that had ‘good bits’."

A green lane is an unmetalled or unpaved rural route, often having fallen into disrepair, that represent a much different driving challenge to cruising on the motorway.

In 2018, Nigel first considered finding a plot of land to test those skills more regularly, putting those 'good bits' in one location.

Four years later, Nigel came across the site in Dalton.

"I managed to find an old iron ore mining site from the early 1900s spanning a whopping 26 acres which had everything I was looking for," he said.

"Water, mud ruts, steep inclines, tippy angles, gravel, rock, steep declines, and even some strange noises coming from the South Lakes Safari Zoo next door."

The site is split up into several zones, all of which represent a differing degree of difficulty.

There are also spots set up for camping, allowing visitors to stay overnight in the Lake District after a hard day of off-road driving and exploring.
