The proprietor of Ulverston's Roxy Cinema hopes the screening of a Cumbrian film about red squirrels will help do its part in helping and preserving the endangered species.

Cumbrian Red: Saving Our Squirrels is set to air at the Roxy Cinema with multi-award winning director Terry Abraham present.

For nearly two years, the Lake District photographer documented the life of red squirrels and also bonded with the species to highlight their plight against the non-native grey squirrel.

The educational film captures the native mammals within the Lake District National Park and Cumbria and features the scientists, rangers, conservationists and locals working to protect them.

Charles Morris, proprietor of Northern Morris Cinemas, has been running cinemas for over 30 years in northern England and is proud to have this particular film coming to Ulverston.

Mr Morris said: "I'm very pleased to be able to host this film at the Roxy Ulverston - especially as we will have the director Terry Abraham present.

"When we first moved to South Lakeland thirty years ago, we saw for the first ever time one or two red squirrels where we live, but it was only for a short period and we have never seen them here again, though there are still some grey squirrels.

The Mail: Cumbrian Red: Saving our red squirrels comes to the Roxy Cinema on Valentine's Day"The last occasion I saw any reds was at Aira Force a couple of years ago.  I am very keen that the species should be preserved and allowed to prosper, though I would not like this to be at the expense of grey squirrels or any other creatures.

"But I hope that by showing this film people will be alerted to the problems facing the reds and can learn what we can do to help."

The film features stunning cinematography and will be shown at 7.30pm on Thursday, February 15.
