'A TRUE Rotarian' from Barrow has been given an Order of the British Empire (BEM) as part of the King's New Year's Honours List for his work in the community.

Peter Garwood, of Fairfield Lane, is an organiser at the Rotary Club of Furness Peninsula which focuses on bringing together men and women to give service to our community.

Mr Garwood received particular praise for his efforts during the Covid-19 Pandemic in which he worked with two other rotary clubs in the region to organise vaccine distribution.

Former president of the club Nicola Stuart-Wood, said: "Peter is a true Rotarian in every sense of the word.

"He’s a very capable man and his contributions cannot be overstated."

During the pandemic, Mr Garwood was constantly present at the Alfred Barrow Medical Centre in Barrow to help people get their vaccine, often committing to 12-hour shifts.

In 2021, he was given a Rotarian of the Year award, a title which is rarely distributed.

Mr Garwood explained: "I really enjoyed organising the rotas and the volunteers and I appreciate the awards that I had for my work but they were really meant for the whole team."

In total, he went through 1,200 volunteer hours at the medical centre up until the last vaccine clinic in Barrow in July 2022.

This year 105 people in the North West have been awarded honours.

This makes up nearly nine per cent of the total number of people who have received New Year honours this year.

Mr Garwood joins a high number of Cumbrians who have been named on the honours list, with HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alexander Scott, congratulating the award winners.

“It is a very proud moment for our county that so many Cumbrian residents have been recognised for their contributions to our communities," he said.

"Anyone can nominate a person for an honour, and I am very keen for people who have given exceptional service to receive the recognition they deserve.”
