A Ukrainian couple have made it possible for Barrovians to order fresh sushi for the first time.

Panda Sushi in Kendal has recently joined the Barrow Eats App meaning that residents of the town and its surrounding area can now enjoy fresh sushi delivered to their door.

Customers can go online to order seafood with the menu having more than 30 different rolls available.

You can order every Wednesday and Friday between 3pm and 5pm and choose from dishes with crab, salmon, eel, shrimp, unagi, tuna and caviar as well as vegetarian rolls.

Panda Sushi is owned by Tetiana Prokopenko and her husband Andrii Pohorielov, who opened their own takeaway business after escaping the war in Ukraine.

Before her hometown was invaded and occupied by Russian forces in March 2022, Tetiana owned a sushi spot in Ukraine.

Tetiana decided to close her shop due to the war before leaving the country and moving to England and making a new life in Cumbria. Shortly after fleeing to the UK, Tetiana had a baby, who is now 5 months old.

Despite being in the UK less than six months, Tetiana has her own takeaway business and makes everything herself.

“I’ve been making sushi myself for a year now,” Tetiana said. “I craved sushi when I was pregnant but I couldn’t find it anywhere. It was my favourite food before I spent all day making it.

“We decided to set up a sushi spot and then join Barrow Eats because we know there isn’t a sushi spot in Barrow or the surrounding areas. People like it, so we want to treat them to it."

Tetiana is currently teaching a new sushi chef who will soon take over as chef and replace her in the kitchen.
