EMPTY retail and workshop units might be transformed into a 14-room aparthotel with a 'staff-free operation,' according to plans.

A planning application describes 94 to 100a Church Street in Barrow as 'an unused and terraced row of retail/workshop units.'

It was submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council by St David Ruby Ltd, a company based in Chester.

"It comprises of five no. terraced properties that have in the past been used for shops and/or workshops," the design and access statements said.

"The building has lay vacant for a number of years and is currently requiring significant remedial works to ensure its longevity."

The proposal is seeking approval for a 'novel and innovative aparthotel concept' with 14 one-bed self-contained rooms. The rooms would have en-suite facilities and kitchenettes.

The aparthotel has an online booking system catered for business travellers, leisure visitors and travellers with flexible needs, plans said.

"The operational model revolves around a staff-free hotel space, except for room turnovers and maintenance. This approach prioritizes guest independence and convenience, enhancing their overall experience during their stay," the plans state.

Guests would reserve their rooms through platforms such as Booking.com. They receive digital room keys to access the rooms, entering via a keyless entry system through their smartphones. Billing and payment processing would also be handled through MEWS, an online property management system.

Room turnovers and cleaning would occur every week or after guest checkout depending on which comes first.

There is no proposed on-site car parking but the developer highlighted public car parking available near the site and access to public transport.

Over the three floors, the ground floor will house seven apartments, the second will offer six and the third will offer one.

The developer also wants to turn a courtyard associated with the units into an 'inviting and functional' outdoor space with cobblestones or an impressed concrete cobblestone effect and planters.
