NETWORK Rail will upgrade sections of track in Cumbria and Lancashire as part of its Christmas works list.

Railway track and ballast will be replaced on the West Coast Main Line at Oxenholme and Bolton-Le-Sands.

There will also be some work upgrading railway equipment approaching Manchester Piccadilly, and work done to the roof of the station.

The railway company said that much of this work will take place during the annual railway shutdown on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Passengers are still advised to check the National Rail website to plan their journeys before and after Christmas.

Passengers travelling further afield in the New Year are being advised of work on New Year’s Day in the West Midlands which could impact long-distance train travel.

Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry will operate a significantly reduced service between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International stations and their trains are expected to be very busy.
