A couple from Ulverston who got stuck in this weekend's snow storm whilst celebrating their first anniversary were helped by a long lost friend.

Lynne Marie Weeks and her husband Geoff were attempting to make a celebratory meal in Bowness on Saturday.

When it became apparent that the road disruptions had made this impossible, they tried to get to a pre-booked B&B in Ambleside.

Lynne said: "We'd resigned ourselves to walking because, all around us, there were cars that had just been abandoned in the road.

"We spotted this little car struggling in the snow as it tried to get up a hill and we decided to help those inside by pushing it to the top."

In a happy coincidence, the drivers happened to be going to Ambleside themselves, though only made it half of the way.

"I'd got dressed up for a fancy meal so I was forced to walk the rest of the way to Ambleside in one of my best dresses," Lynne explained.

"Thankfully, we had some hiking gear in the car because we'd planned on going walking as part of the trip, but I must have looked like a right sight whilst wearing big boots with a short dress."

On Sunday morning, the couple attempted to make it back to their car on foot, before their guardian angel arrived.

"A car drove past and the guy poked his head out of the window, and it turned out to be someone my husband had known 17 years ago.

"Geoff had no idea how Ryan recognised him because he was just a young boy back then."

Ryan Thompson had been stuck in his car over night but did not let this deter him from helping other people.

"He was amazing because he managed to free our car but, when we offered to help him, he told us to get going and to not look back.

"When we drove past later, he was there digging others cars out, not going home until he'd done his bit when he'd already gone above and beyond."
