A CRITICALLY endangered 11-year-old female Sumatran tiger has died.

Mayang (aka Phuket) moved from South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton to Fota Wildlife Park in Cork, Ireland, in June 2017.

Fota Wildlife Park announced that Mayang died on November 14 due to renal failure.

She had been treated by the veterinary team as soon as she showed symptoms of listlessness and lack of appetite but her condition deteriorated rapidly and a decision was made to put her to sleep.

Lead ranger Julien Fonteneau said: “Mayang was a beautiful and elegant ambassador of her species and was much loved by the public.

“Mayang is greatly missed by the animal care rangers who looked after her daily, our visitors and the whole team at Fota Wildlife Park.”

Recent estimates suggest there are only 300-500 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild, with no subpopulation larger than 50 and a declining trend.

They are the smallest of all tiger subspecies and have been classified as Critically Endangered since 2008.
