Schoolchildren spent their time picking up litter on Askam beach to learn more about protecting the environment.

The year three and four pupils from Broughton Church of England Primary School were taking part in their 'Eco Day' on Wednesday.

They were helped by Trash Free Trails, a group that works to protect wild areas and the most popular outdoor tourist hotspots.

Teacher Ross Cousins said: "The children have been reading a book about recycling rubbish and giving things a new life so we decided to explore that further by having a ‘Eco day’ this week.

"As part of that, we spent the morning litter picking at Askam Beach."

The group were also assisted by a local charity, which provided them with all the tools they needed to complete the work.

"We borrowed the litter picking equipment from Morecambe Bay Partnership, who have been leading litter picks around the area for the last 20 years," said Mr Cousins.

"They were happy to let us borrow the equipment to allow the children to do their bit for the environment and, in the end, we collected around 30kg of rubbish."

The learning didn't stop there with the team from Trash Free Trails coming to the school to talk about the work they do in the local community.

"In the afternoon we had a visit from team members from Trash Free Trails, who spoke to the children about nature connection, what types of rubbish they can find and what they can do to help reduce it whilst out on trails in their local environment," Mr Cousins explained.

"We finished the day by creating posters on our learning from the day that we plan to put around school."

Through this, the children were brought into the 'Trash Mob Community', the collective designed by Trash Free Trails to bring together the people who are fighting to keep our region clean.
