A 9-month-old child has been nominated as the star of Barrow's Christmas Lights Switch-on event.

Louis McKenna, who will turn one the week before Christmas, received the most number of likes following a Facebook campaign.

Louis was diagnosed with end stage kidney disease in March at only 11 weeks old and is currently waiting for a kidney transplant.

His sister, Annabelle, aged four, will also help switch the lights on after showing a high level of 'maturity' during the difficult time.

A spokesperson from the event said: "The family are backwards and forwards to Manchester Children’s Hospital and she just takes it in her stride, having to stay with family, 100 miles from her mummy, daddy and baby brother."

The show is due to take place on Saturday, November 18, starting at 3pm and lasting until 6pm.
