In August of this year, a RECORD number of A-level students at Ulverston Victoria High School took up places at their first-choice university or higher apprenticeship, and on Thursday, November 23rd prospective students and their parents will have the opportunity to see for themselves what makes the UVHS Sixth Form such an excellent choice for those looking to excel both academically and in terms of personal development.

The open evening, which runs from 6pm until 8pm, will give prospective students and their parents the opportunity to:

  • Tour the school and Sixth Form-specific areas, including the Common Room, Resource Area and Coach House computer suite;
  • Speak to teachers and students of over 20 academic A-level subjects to discover more about our qualifications;
  • Find out about our extra-curricular opportunities including musical ensembles and performing arts productions, the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, sports, Extended Project Qualification and large numbers of clubs and societies such as Vic Medics, Law Society and Reading Buddies;
  • Listen to a presentation by our Director of Post-16 Studies, Rob Rastelli, at either 6pm or 7:15pm.

The Mail:

The Class of 2023 secured a superb set of results: over a third (35%) of grades were either an A* or A and two thirds of the grades awarded were at A*-B. Five students secured places at either Oxford or Cambridge University and the vast majority of others (around 87%) were able to take up places at their first-choice destinations, including study for courses in medicine and veterinary science.

Many students are attracted by our strongly academic reputation, particularly in subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Computer Science and Music. It is important to note that for those students who choose not to go to university there are numerous opportunities to gain higher (degree0 apprenticeships, particularly with firms such as BAE, Forge Europa and Sellafield.

With one of our primary aims being to promote the personal development of students, all our sixth formers are encouraged to involve themselves in the wider life of the school; in this they are fully supported, both academically and pastorally, by our dedicated Sixth Form Team and Sixth Form tutors.

In addition, excellent transport links mean we attract students from all the local 11-16 comprehensives with 50% of our sixth formers previously attending other schools. Our student numbers speak for themselves: the current Year 12 and Year 13 cohort are our biggest ever and we have over 320 students in total in our Sixth Form.

Director of Post-16 Studies, Rob Rastelli, said: “I would strongly encourage any student who is considering applying to our sixth form to come along on Thursday, November 23rd to find out more about what we have to offer. You will get the chance to speak to teachers who are passionate about their subject, current students who can give a genuine insight into what it is like to study here, as well as tour the school to see our sixth form only areas such as the Common Room and Resource Area. I will also be on hand to answer any questions at the end of both of my talks. It promises to be an excellent evening!”
