Barrow's famous heritage and shipbuilding past inspired one dad to add the town to his creation of treasure maps and is now the first Cumbrian location to have one.

Daniel Johnson, 46, developed the idea for Treasure Map Trails during the first lockdown, when he was searching for ways to entertain his daughters Bella, now 11, and Jessica now 8.

They began to make lots of treasure maps around the house before Dan decided to do something bigger for his own hometown of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire.

As soon as the lockdown restrictions were lifted, he created the map to give away to local people. The feedback was more than he could have imagined so he created more maps for local towns as the interest continued to grow.

Today, his company, Treasure Map Trails, has more than 50 maps of towns and cities across the UK. They caught the attention of Westmorland & Furness Council and earlier this year, he was invited by the team to create a map of Barrow.

The dad-of-two said: "The town centre has everything we need for a brilliant family adventure.

"There are incredible buildings with extravagant features, interesting memorials to the town's past and famous people, and some hidden gems that brought a smile to my face.

"The Barrow Treasure Map Trail takes families from one side of town to the other, revealing local treasures along the way.

"The map is hand drawn, colourful and illustrated with a shipbuilding fantasy theme that small kids will love - and ties in with the town's famous heritage.

"We're thrilled to see the map available for free at Barrow Library and The Forum, and we hope that families have fun completing the adventure and discovering a new side of this fantastic town."

The Mail: The Barrow Treasure Map Trail includes some of the town's iconic landmarksThe map with "fantastical shipyard with engineering elves crafting super subs and splendid ships" aims to promote active lifestyles.

Each map, a colour-splashed A3 poster, can be folded, followed, and written on by young explorers as they uncover clues.

Completing the trail rewards explorers with a downloadable certificate.

The map trails are free and are available at Barrow Library and The Forum's box office.

The creation was a collaboration between Daniel's Treasure Map Trails company and Westmorland and Furness Council.
