A leading North West training provider has been selected to help Tesco in Barrow recruit shopworkers ahead of the Christmas rush.

PHX Training is working with PeoplePlus to help the supermarket chain train up and fill job vacancies before the approaching festive season.

Following an intensive, two-week training session, recruits between the ages of 19 and 30 will undergo 16 hours of work placement at Tesco superstores in Barrow, Workington and Carlisle.

Julie Torrance, head of employment and training at PHX Training, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Tesco and PeoplePlus with the programme, and helping young people looking to retrain in a new sector to find work.

“This intensive level of training can help dozens of people to quickly reskill and find work in a key role over the Christmas period as well as helping people to get back into employment during a busy time of year.”

Following the work placement, participants will be guaranteed a job interview.

The training will start on Monday, October 16, followed by the placement which starts on Monday, October 30.

Those taking part will learn about customer services and retail, health and wellbeing, and essential digital skills as part of the scheme.

Upon completion, candidates will gain recognised qualifications in customer service and personal money management.

Tesco has organised this as part of their Movement to Work strategy, a registered UK charity that was set up in 2013 by a group of the UK’s largest employers.

This aims to provide high-quality work experience and training to unemployed young people.

Those interested in taking part should contact their local Job Centre Plus or email info@phxtraining.co.uk, whilst the PHX website can provide details on the further training they offer.
