THE Roxy Collective has started to paint the exterior of the historic Roxy building and has almost completed work on the roof.

The group is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) that was formed to purchase The Roxy in Ulverston and renovate it. The building hosts the Roxy Cinema, the Laurel and Hardy Museum, U-Gym Ulverston and 808010 Productions.

The cinema opened in June 1937, and work needs to be done to the building to secure its future.

The collective is currently painting the exterior of the building in white, which is a new colour scheme, and they created a new logo for the Roxy. Most importantly, it has almost completed work on the roof to make it watertight, which chair Suzanne Garnett said was one of the main aims from the beginning of the renovation work.

When the collective shared photos of the fixed roof on social media, it called a puddle of water that had previously collected at the top 'a duck pond.'

he said: "Everything is going to plan. It hasn't helped that we have had so much rain. The priority for us was always fixing the roof and making it watertight.

"I think everyone is really excited. Everyone wants to know what it looks like when it's done. "

Suzanne recognised that some Ulverston residents may be wondering when the scaffolding will come down, but she said that it 'all hinges on the weather.'In terms of future work, she said: "There's work we want to do in the interior of the building though that is dependant on the funding." Suzanne promised more updates on what the next stage of the project will be 'soon.'

The group was awarded a £300,000 grant in December from the government's Community Ownership Fund towards the purchase and renovation of the building.

They also received funding from the town council, Ulverston BID, local businesses and donations from members of the public to make the project happen.
