A NEW music video has been created as part of a charity campaign to raise money for homeless people in Furness.

A cover of the Ralph McTell song Streets of London, re-named to 'Streets of Furness', is being released to raise money for Furness Homeless Support Group as part of a campaign led by Barrow Town councillor Paul Griffiths, called Forty Winks for Furness.

Dozens of people will sleep in Barrow AFC's SO Legal Stadium on Saturday, December 9 to experience 'how it feels to sleep rough in the middle of winter’ in the Sleep On the Stands event.

People on the guest list for the event include local mayors Michelle Scrogham, Nick Perie, Chris Altree and the Furness MP Simon Fell.

Cllr Griffiths’ daughter Kelly Griffiths will release the song on the Forty Winks 4 Furness Facebook page.

It takes influence from a cover by the late singer Sinead O'Connor, she said.

She recorded a promo video for the song in Scratch Studio in Liverpool having learnt it in only a few weeks. The song will be released this week.

She will also perform it at the Barrow AFC stadium for the event.

Kelly said: "I'm made up for it. I didn't know the song until about six weeks ago. I am a singer, he asked if I would be interested in doing it. We got somebody to get a backing track for us. It is the words, it's the message behind it."

The song was originally inspired by the plight of homeless people and in 2017 it was re-recorded by Ralph McTell with Annie Lennox to be released as a charity single to raise money for homeless charity Crisis.

Speaking about her father's campaign, Kelly said: "He took inspiration from other events from around the country to raise money for homelessness. We're hoping to get as many people as we can to put themselves forward to come out.

"We're doing in December to get that harsh element of what other people are going through. We're really getting as close as we can to what it must be like to be homeless."

She said that she 'can't wait' for the single to be out.

"I've seen the video and the work that the studio has done on video is amazing,” she said.
