THE council responded to videos and photographs taken by residents in south Cumbria during torrential rain on Sunday (September 10) of water overwhelming the drains.

A shot taken by Ulverston resident Rochelle Davey shows a man clearing a drain next to a car with a metal rod on Watery Lane. Another photo taken by Andrew Maiden also shows a man trying to unblock a drain in the town.

Sharon Smith took a video of water bubbling out of a drain behind a bus.

A spokesperson for Westmorland and Furness Council said: “Our Highways teams deliver a routine gully cleansing programme across all council areas, to ensure areas particularly prone to flooding are maintained.

“The area saw up to 50mm of rainfall during a short period of time over the weekend, which is a significant downpour and this has overwhelmed the drainage systems.

“Our crews have been exceptionally busy and have been out responding to areas of flooding throughout the weekend and are also engaged in further cleansing activities today.

“We encourage the public to make us aware of any gully-related issues by completing our highways online reporting form or by telephoning the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3306, so our teams can assess and undertake necessary repair work efficiently.”
