A community hub in Barrow at risk of closure has received a lifeline donation of £1,000 from the Furness Building Society.
Responding to desperate financial appeals, the society stepped in to support Schneider Road Community Hub, which provides crucial services such as toddler groups, children’s clubs, and a support network for local parents.
Not to be overlooked, the hub also offers regular social activities for older residents, combating isolation and promoting wellness.
Tracy Matthews, who runs the Schneider Road Community Hub, said: “This donation is a huge help for us.
"Every penny raised is greatly appreciated as it enables us to continue providing essential services to the people who need them most.
"We’re urgently appealing to the local community for support during these difficult times and have set up a JustGiving to help keep the hub open.”
Averaging over 100 weekly visits for activities such as bingo and crafting, the centre heavily leaned on varied funding, including national lottery grants.
However, a consistent income is now urgently necessary for its long-term survival.
A JustGiving page, created in July 2023, to generate the required steady income, has so far managed to raise £770 of its £2000 target.
Anthony Kearney, Marketing Implementation Manager at Furness Building Society, commented: “The hub provides an invaluable service for our community, and we’re proud to help the organisation continue its important work.
"Furness Building Society has a long history of supporting local charities and clubs, as we believe it’s important to give back to the communities that we serve.
"This donation is just one way that we’re doing that.”
