WAYNE Singleton has started his 90-mile swim from Bowness on Solway to Silverdale.

The 48-year-old hopes to be in Silverdale by next Wednesday and is raising money for the Brathay Trust.

Last year he said he wanted to cover an average of ten miles a day with six hours in the water and six hours rest.

Wayne is an athletics coach, mountain leader and radio presenter, and he said after his first stint in the water that the swim is 'amazing but very hard work.'

He decided to do the challenge after swimming the length of Windermere in 2021. He initially wanted to swim across the English Channel before the age of 50 but decided to do the Cumbrian swim as an alternative challenge.

He said: "This particular route hasn't been done before as one swim. This will have a defined entry and exit point so that it can become the focus of a challenge for others in the future."

Wayne will be supported by kayak paddlers throughout the journey but will have more substantial support for the final section around Walney Island and across Morecambe Bay.
