Hawkshead agricultural show returned with a bang after five years of bad weather and the Covid-19 pandemic.

There were dogs and horses competing for best in class as well as fell racing, vintage tractors and lots of stalls.

In the centre of the field three rings were busy with the horses including fell ponies, Shetlands and heavy horses, mountain and moorland, light horses and working hunters.

A smaller, corner ring held the dog classes with rough then smooth haired sheepdogs, working terriers, whippets, rough and then smooth-haired lurchers as well as foxhounds.

There was also a pet class with titles for Most Handsome Boy, Prettiest Girl, Golden Oldie (over 10), Cutest Puppy (under one), Best Rescue, Best Young Handler (under 12), Judges Favourite and Waggiest Tail.

Around the outside perimeter stalls were selling hot food and drinks such as hog roast, coffee and milkshakes, as well as clothing, sweets and more. You could find children’s toys, hand crafted items, jams and chutneys, woodwork, face painting and bee wax balms.

Outside of the main field were two barns where the horticultural judging took place, gardeners competed for the best flowers and the best vegetables.

A homecraft section judged cooking, eggs, photography and art, they also had a children’s section.

Secretary Sue Todd said this year was the first time Hawkshead Show had tried selling tickets online to purchase before the event and it had gone very well.

She said: “We’re very pleased to be going ahead, it's thanks to everyone and their support. There are a few new things and we hope to add more next year. We are starting to build it back up again.”
