ON SEPTEMBER 10, 14 and 15 visitors will be able to step inside Hawkshead Grammar School's historic library, which is usually closed to the public.
It is one of the few remaining historic school libraries which remains in situ, inside the school building (and room) it was set up in. The library houses approximately 1600 books, some dating back to the 16th Century. The guide will give visitors a 20-minute talk about the library, with a tour, and will be able to answer questions.
The school was founded in 1585 and was open until 1909. Its alumni include William Wordsworth and William Pearson. The library collection reveals the subjects studied at school and demonstrates changes in bookbinding and styles of books over time.
Some of the books even still contain doodles and notes from the students.
The museum does not require booking, it asks visitors to arrive any time on those days between 11am and 4pm.
