A pub has re-opened after a chandelier fell - taking some of the ceiling with it.

The Pig and Whistle in Cartmel is a traditional oak-beamed pub complete with a real log fire.

Owners say the mishap was to do with the pub being such an old building. The fall took the electronics with it which were all interconnected and also needed to be repaired. Luckily, the incident happened overnight so no-one was harmed.

A post from five days ago on the Pig and Whistle Facebook page said: "Unfortunately due to an unforeseen structural issue we have been forced to close until repairs can be carried out.

"We are uncertain of an exact reopening date but unfortunately we have had to cancel both pie night and the pub quiz. We will be reaching out to bookings individually but please feel free to also pass on this information to any Facebook-averse people you may be in contact with.

"We will keep you up to date with more information when we receive it."

The Royal Oak, also in Cartmel, offered to take the pub's quiz night with the usual host, Jackson, with the same format. Pie Night could not be transferred but there was the Royal's food to pick from.

The pub managed to re-open on Saturday (July 29) and was open from 3pm for drinks and then from 5pm for food. The pub has now reverted back to its usual opening hours.

Speaking on a Facebook post on July 27, staff said: "Thank you all for your concern and messages of support, it is a great comfort in a difficult situation."
