TAKE a look inside the new store which has opened up on Barrow’s high street.

Gambling giant BoyleSports is the latest chain to join Barrow’s town centre.

Plans to open a BoyleSports in the town were recommended for approval last September despite fears over anti-social behaviour.

The shop has taken the place of the former BrightHouse store after it shut in 2020.

When plans were first submitted for the store, the betting chain revealed it was due to invest more than £200,000 into the new store, creating three full-time and three part-time jobs.

One objection was lodged against the plan, raising concern there would be a 'detrimental impact upon the character of the shopping area'.

There were also fears the shop could potentially lead to increased levels of anti-social behaviour.

Despite these concerns, the gambling store was given the green light – and opened to the public on May 10.

A spokeswoman for BoyleSports confirmed there will be six people employed in the Barrow shop, with the added benefit of wider employment in the construction and operational phase moving forward.

Each new Boyle Sports unit creates 26 temporary construction jobs over the eight-week construction period. It also creates ongoing, indirect employment, through the supply chain for consumables, waste management and utilities, a spokeswoman for the gambling giant said.

Sharon McHugh, head of Communications for BoyleSports, said: “BoyleSports is looking forward very much to bringing our customers in Barrow more choice along with our signature customer service in our new retail outlet. We pride ourselves on ensuring our customers have an enjoyable and comfortable space to bet.”

BoyleSports is the largest independent retail bookmaker in Ireland and is actively expanding its retail and on-line presence in the UK.
