A TOURIST attraction is honouring the centenary of the Flying Scotsman by making the steam travel the theme of its 2023 maize maze.

Pathways have been cut into the six to eight-foot-high maize crop at Lakeland Maze Farm Park taking the form of a steam train when viewed from above.

Crack the puzzles and find the correct route through pathways that offer ‘green lights’ or dead ends. 'Controllers’ sit at ‘junction boxes’ within the maze to offer helpful advice when needed.

The maze usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes to complete. The double national Maze of the Year winner will open their new design on Saturday July 15.

You can also try the mini maze, which can typically be cracked in 15-25 minutes. It is designed as a pocket watch – for the ‘station master’ to keep things on schedule.

The steam train theme is also very fitting because West Coast Railways’ steam trains pass along the line beside the farm park a few times a week.

Lakeland Maze Farm Park, at Sedgwick near Kendal, also offers Water Wars allowing to fire water-filled balloons at an opponent’s battle station - but have a towel or change of clothes at the ready.

Last year, they unveiled the 150-foot Super Mega Ride N Slide for visitors to travel down in an inflatable ring and super giant trampoline Air Bouncers were installed the year before.

These attractions are all included within the entrance price, alongside outdoor karting, giant draughts, spring-free trampolines, wooden panel maze and a 15-minute tractor and trailer ride each day at 1.30pm.

Indoors there is soft play, a climbing wall, indoor go-karts, a tube maze, giant Lego, vintage tractors and coin-operated quad bikes.  In a few weeks, the sunflower field will also be open for flower picking.

An outdoor animal walkway has been added this year. Visitors can pet animals, feed them, and enjoy the demonstrations.  The farm is home to alpaca, llamas, goats, rabbits, ferrets, cows, chickens, pigs, horses, donkey, sheep, small rodents and Wally the huarizo – an alpaca and llama cross.

The owner of Lakeland Maze Farm Park Graham Wadsworth said: “We are doing all we can to pack as much value as we can into a day out in the Lake District and people can easily find enough to do, to make the most of every hour between opening at 10am and closing at 5pm.

“We understand that people want to spend wisely on their days out this year but believe that our steam travel-themed mazes, plus all of our other activities, will be just the ticket, allowing them to max the value they get from their money.”
