A TOWN’S pubs, bars and venues were inundated with music in celebration of a weekend full of folk music, song and dance.

Furness Tradition Folk Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary this weekend with a packed programme of entertainment in Ulverston.

The volunteer-led festival promotes folk traditions in Cumbria and is themed around music, dance and art.

As well as running workshops in schools and the community, a core part of the organisers’ aims is to collect items from cultural heritage, oral or written.

Two competitions took place at this year's 25th festival - including an all-new songwriting competition.

Competitors were invited to write a song about one of three themes: local history, people and community Furness traditions.

The dance tune competition also returned this year, where people were asked to compose a traditional style dance tune – jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas and waltzes - to be in with a chance of lifting the John Hazlehurst Memorial Trophy.

Mayor of Ulverston Michelle Scrogham opened the popular festival which saw dancers and musicians line the town’s streets.

She said: “We probably all have family traditions and stories that we pass down over the years, never really thinking that they’re unique to us or our towns and villages, but we continue them to remind ourselves of a sense of family and belonging.”

The event showcases dance, stories and folk music that have been passed down by generations, keeping them alive for all to enjoy.
