A BARROW primary school has been selected as the runner up in a national award.

Dane Ghyll Primary and Nursery School are the runners up in the Primary Awards for Green Education in Schools 2023 with the project 'The Growing School.

Almost 40,000 young people were involved in the creation of entries for this year’s competition.

The judges said: "It was fantastic to see the diverse approaches that schools in the UK are taking to delivering environmental education to their children. The young people’s passion and commitment really shone through!

"With almost 300 entries received, it was a very difficult decision to select our winners and runners-up, so you and all of the children involved should be very proud of this achievement.

"The work you do in the school gardens is truly amazing. We love the way in which the children are involved throughout the school and they all have such a strong commitment to their outdoor learning. The blend of photos and examples of the children's work showed us just how much they have learned and how much they have enjoyed it."

Louise Postlethwaite, head gardener at Dane Ghyll, said: "We are absolutely delighted winning this national award. The children work extremely hard in the school gardens, growing plants from seed, watering and nurturing them. We grow our own vegetables which the children harvest and then use to cook with."
