FIRE services are pleading with the public to take more care after battling a widespread fire at a nature reserve.

Walney and Barrow fire crews were called out on Sunday evening after reports of a 'fire in the open', covering an area the size of two football pitches, at Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve.

Walney Fire Station posted: "Crews battled in difficult conditions to extinguish the fire.

"This is the 12th callout in five days attended by the crew with the majority being nuisance fires.

"As the dry spell continues please be aware of the dangers posed by BBQs and discarded smoking materials.

"The cause is still being investigated."
