Environmentalist protestors from Cumbria were joined by Springwatch presenter Chris Packham at a disruptive march in London over the weekend.

He is currently filming a documentary about nonviolent direct action and joined the Just Stop Oil protestors who finished their fifth week of daily slow marching in central London on Saturday.

The organisation said it demands an end to all new oil, gas, and coal projects in the UK.

Cumbria isn’t unfamiliar with the ongoing pushback against coal, with plans for a new coal mine at Whitehaven being met with opposition from people concerned about carbon emissions - as well as support from other areas.

Chris Packham said to LBC about the protest: “If it isn’t a disruptive protest, it doesn’t get news.”

Just Stop Oil supporters have been marching every day since April 24.

Al, a paramedic from Cumbria, said: “Climate breakdown is the biggest threat to human health we have ever faced.

“It is happening more rapidly than previously thought and represents an urgent global crisis expected to trigger unprecedented changes to climate systems, with devastating impacts for human health and wellbeing.”

“We have a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable climate.

“Health professionals have a responsibility to act.

“We must call for an end to all subsidies, investments, new licenses and consent for fossil fuels.”

Kat Dutching, 32, a specialist nurse from Cumbria, said: “I’m an NHS professional and I just can’t sit back and allow our criminal government to give the go-ahead to over 100 new oil and gas projects.

“We know, and the government knows, that will mean more heatwaves, wildfires, and death.

“We also know that the days of thinking we can get the change we need by lobbying out MPs and making the right lifestyle choices are long gone.

“We need to get out on the streets, and that’s why sensible, trusted voices like Chris Packham and Gary Lineker are coming out in support of Just Stop Oil’s tactics because they understand that we’ve run out of options and that disruptive protest is effective, and therefore necessary at this point in history.”
