ONE of Barrow's oldest pubs is up for auction.

The Dirty Duck will be auctioned online by Pugh with a £32,000 guide price.

The Raglan Street pub is over 200 years old and was previously thought to have been called the Black Swan.

The building, which houses a bar, lounge and games area, three bedrooms, a kitchen, lounge and bathroom, has been vacant since 2019 when the owners retired.

That year the pub was put up for sale through estate agents Corrie & Co who marketed it for £150,000.

David Corrie, of Corrie & Co, told the Mail at the time: “I went to value it at 11am and there was a queue of people at the door waiting for it to open.

“It’s an iconic pub in Barrow - it just needs someone to put it on the map.”

Bidding on the former pub opens on May 23 at 10am and closes the following day.

Paul Thompson, managing director at Pugh, said: “The Dirty Duck was a well-loved pub and it would be fantastic to see the site become an asset to the local community once more.

"The pub could represent an attractive residential or commercial development opportunity for an investor, subject to gaining the necessary planning consent.

“The property sits right on the edge of the multi-million-pound Barrow Waterside project, which will bring hundreds of much-needed homes to the town, and is one of seven regeneration projects which are transforming the town.

"Not only is the Dirty Duck an excellent development opportunity, but this is also a great time to invest in Barrow.”

The Barrow Waterside project will see 550 homes built on the former industrial site south of the A5087 on Salthouse Road.

In November 2021, Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) agreed to invest £5.5m of its Getting Building Fund from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Housing and Local Government (MCHLG) in the scheme.

The #BrilliantBarrow programme also secured an offer of £25m funding in 2021 from the Government's Towns Fund.

The pub's listing adds: "The property has suffered from vandalism and requires extensive refurbishment."
