A BOMB disposal team was called out after an item was found on a Furness beach.

The British Army crew joined coastguard teams after a suspected piece of military artillery was found near Bardsea.

The emergency services, which included Furness Coastguard and Ulverston and Duddon Inshore Rescue teams, used quad bikes to locate the item.

Fears were allayed when it was found to be a wooden mock-up of a three-inch mortar.

Crews were directed to the item by a member of the public, who recorded its location using the What3Words app.

A Furness Coastguard spokesman said: "Furness Coastguard were called out yesterday lunchtime to assist the army in a search for a reported item of ordnance.

"The first informant had located the item on the sands and taken a What3Words location of the item.

"Furness Coastguard quickly located the item and with the assistance of Ulverston and Duddon Inshore rescue, we transported the Army to the location on quad bikes.

"Fortunately the item turned out to be a wooden mock-up of a 3” mortar."

The incident happened near to the Kingfisher car park.
