A 100-year-old World War Two veteran was 'over the moon' to receive a letter from the King and the Queen Consort for her birthday.

Ella Thompson was a member of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women's branch of the army which helped on the domestic front by maintaining supplies for the troops.

Ella is originally from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. She spent much of the war in Lancaster before moving to Walney with her husband James.

After stopping work for a while to have children, she returned to work as a dinner lady at Ormsgill School in 1967.

It was in this role that she became well-known and loved in the local community.

She celebrated her birthday at Barrow Golf Club on the weekend before with eighty people. Not only were family members in attendance but also friends she had not seen in years from the school.

For her actual birthday on Monday, April 24, she had a quieter day with her family.

Some of these teachers heard of the event through Facebook.

Brian, one of her children, said: "She is over the moon. It was a good party, many had come a great distance to be there. She had a great day." Brian particularly highlighted the cakes and the bottle of Bristol Cream sherry which Ella enjoys.

The letter was of particular importance to Ella as unlike most people she remembers the last time the country had a King.

She has seen George V, Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth II and Charles III on the throne.

Brian said: "Unlike a lot of us she has seen four kings in her lifetime. A lot of us don't know anything but the Queen."

However, Brian joked that now Ella is past her 100th birthday 'it's sort of an anti-climax; as they are now just waiting for her to turn 101.

Brian said that his favourite part of the day was 'seeing her reaction to lots of friends and families she had met at Ormsgill School'.

He said: "A couple of the teachers came because of Facebook. A really good birthday that was filled back-to-back."
