AN APPLICATION to resurface a section of a Lake District car park is due to be scrutinised at a meeting.

The Lowther Estate Trust wants to have tarmacadam put down on 500 sq metres of White Moss Car Park, which is situated off the A591 between Rydal and Grasmere.

The plan is due to be considered by the Lake District National Park Authority's development control committee on May 4.

In a report produced ahead of the meeting, planner Kelsey Blain says the crushed stone surface of the car park is 'often severely potholed and in need of regular repair' and that tarmacadam would be 'more resilient'.

"There is an essential need for this development in this location as it relates to improvements to an existing and long-established car park," says Ms Blain.

"The proposed resurfacing material would be similar in appearance to the existing."

She recommends the application for approval.

The application is to be brought before the development control committee owing to objections from Lakes Parish Council (LPC).

In a representation published online, Charlene Iredale, LPC clerk and finance officer, says the applicant has not demonstrated the proposal is 'reasonably necessary'.

"The surface would not be sympathetic to the local character and its landscape setting," she says.
