Have you ever stumbled across a neighbour while sauntering across the beaches of Spain?

We asked our readers to finish the sentence ‘you can always spot somebody from Barrow abroad because they…”, and here’s what they said.

Stephanie Kerr said: “You recognise them getting out of the lift (happened to me in Spain 17 years ago).”

Helen Louise Armes said: “Just from the way they talk met someone in Australia at the pool table and they knew I was from Barrow.”

Nicole Thorburn-Wilson said: “Are drinking at 10am.”

Carol Dunford said: “Thick northern accent. Super strong. I’ve been out of Barrow for 20 years. I know straight away. Definitely the way we speak.

“Met a lady in Kettering last year she shouted her dog.

“I asked if she was from Cumbria, she said yeah Barrow. Hahaha. It’s such a small place Barrow.

“Yet barriovions are worldwide. My son lives in Canada. He also came across a guy from Barrow.”

Stephen Gibson said: “Are first at the bar and last one to leave.”

Aaron Jackson said: “I was in Benidorm a few years back and there was a group from Barrow in the same hotel, we were talking about the Theatre Bar and a lass shouted up and said are you from Barrow and the other lady worked also at the Haven in Flookburgh where I was at the time.”

Lisa Speakman said: “Say they’re from the Lake District.”

Simon Burns said: “The accent. Me and my wife went to Rome a few years ago and we shared the airport transfer minibus with six people. A guy on the minibus asked me if I from Barrow-in-Furness, to which I replied, I live very close to Barrow. When I asked him how he had an idea where I was from, he told me that the Barrow area accent is distinguishable from other Northern England accents.”
