VOLUNTEERS have come together to support a community planting day to improve a town centre's street.

Over the course of two days, on March 30 and April 18, members of the public, business owners and the local authority went to Portland Walk and Dalton Road as part of the project to improve the look of the area.

The installation of planters is part of the shared prosperity fund project being undertaken by Barrow BID in partnership with Westmorland and Furness Council, which also included the deep cleaning of the area and artwork installation.

The final aspect of the project has seen Barrow BID install planters along the full length of Portland Walk, making it a greener space and creating windbreaks around the seating areas.

All aspects of the project have been sourced and delivered locally, with the planters custom-made by Barrow-based company, Lakes Gates, soil and compost supplied by Travis Perkins, tools by Burrows and the deep cleaning and plant watering undertaken by GrimefightersUK.

Plants were locally sourced from Tythe Barn Nurseries in Dalton, with both Steve and Craig from Tythe Bran also assisting with planting advice to ensure that the planters will remain looking good throughout the year and will survive the Barrow weather.

Additional planting work was also undertaken at the bottom of Dalton Road to renew the existing planters which were already in place ready for the summer.

Paul Hodgson, manager of Barrow BID said: "We have had a really positive response to the work we have been undertaking on Portland Walk from both businesses and members of the public.

"A priority of this project, and of Barrow BID in general has been to keep all spending local, with us successfully managing to deliver all aspects of the project in line with this.

"None of this would have been possible though without the hard work and dedication of all the volunteers and the people of Barrow who turned out in their numbers to support us and help us improve our town together as a team!"

Matt Blackburn of GrimefightersUK, said: "It has been a pleasure to be able to work alongside Barrow BID on this project undertaking the deep cleaning of Portland Walk which will hopefully have a really positive impact on the town centre.

"We received loads of really positive comments from passersby while we were completing the work, including many businesses who were coming out to tell us how much difference this was going to make to the footfall in the area.

"As a company, we are always on the lookout for ways we can help benefit community projects in our local area."
