TESCO has revealed why its Barrow petrol station will be closed for nearly two months.

The filling station at the Hindpool Road supermarket will be closed until June 2, while work takes place at the site.

The supermarket chain said the closure has been put in place to allow work on the fuel storage tanks to be carried out.

The petrol station closed to motorists on April 18.

The supermarket chain, which has three stores in Barrow, apologised for any disruption caused by the closure.

But it said the work needing to be performed was vital.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “The petrol station at our Barrow in Furness store will be closed until 2nd June to allow us to carry out scheduled work to the fuel storage tanks.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience to our customers while this essential work takes place.”

The nearest alternative petrol stations are at Morrisons in The Strand and Asda in Walney Road.

With fuel prices spiralling over the last 18 months amid the war in Ukraine, Tesco has been among the vendors with the lowest prices at the pumps.

The Office for National Statistics said yesterday that UK inflation slowed last month on the back of lower petrol prices but remained in double figures as household budgets continue to come under pressure.

The ONS said inflation of the Consumer Prices Index fell to 10.1 per cent in March from 10.4 per cent in February.

Nevertheless, it remained higher than experts had predicted as food and drink prices continued to soar.

Increases were partly offset by lower fuel costs, with petrol and diesel costs down 5.9 per cent against the same month last year after prices had spiked following Russia’s invasion.
