AN organisation supporting people dealing with drug and alcohol rehabilitation has been invited to 10 Downing Street for the positive impact of their work in the community.

The Well Communities has been invited to attend the PM's home on April 24 as a 'champion' of the third sector and for the 'great impact' the organisation's work has on the communities they serve.

The Well supports people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction through therapy, counselling, peer mentoring, employment training and social activities.

Ged Pickersgill, business developement manager of The Well, said it was an 'honour' to be invited but shared a 'strange feeling' as nine years ago he was homeless in the streets of London.

He said: "I find it really good recognition of the esteem that the organisation is held in.

"On this occasion it is a completely kettle of fish - one minute I'm street homeless in London and the next minute myself and our chief executive Dave are going down to 10 Downing Street.

"We work really hard at a really grassroots level. We are supporting hundreds of people each week.

"We don't seek applause for what we do. We have attracted high profile visitors over the years, including the Home Secretary Priti Patel.

"It is visible proof that change is possible. For an organisation to grow organically over a period of time in this town - we are fiercely proud to be in Barrow."

Dave Higham, founder of The Well Communities, said: "It is absolutely mind blowing to be invited and to be recognised for the work we do in our community helping the most vulnerable people so it is a previlege and a blessing.

Simon Fell, the Member of Parliment for Barrow and Furness said: "I'm delighted to be able to invite Dave and Ged to Downing Street.

"The Well makes a huge difference in Barrow and beyond - both to those facing severe issues of addiciton, and to the community which they are focussed on giving back to.

"I was very pleased to help them fundraise £25,000 for a new minibus last month and will continue to champion this amazing and inspirational local charity which does so much for local people."

Reccently Mr Higham was invited to speak at the United Nations in Vienna about the impact of his organisation in the community.

He said: "It was absolutely amazing and humbling to present the work we do in The Well."
