A BARROW charity is celebrating a century of helping people.

From their base at 67/69 Cavendish Street, Vision Support Barrow  and District has spent 100 years supporting people with visual impairments.

The charity works to support people with visual impairments across South West Cumbria by providing everything from welfare and claims support to running social groups and day trips.

With over 800 members, Vision Support Barrow and District also provide technological support helping people with visual impairments use computers and phones as well as specialist equipment like electronic magnifiers.

To celebrate reaching the 100th-year milestone, the charity is hosting a raffle. 100 prizes have been donated by various businesses and people.

Star prizes include a one-week stay in Portugal, a signed Barrow AFC shirt and ball, a 70cl bottle of Kin Toffee Vodka and a Samsung Galaxy A53 5G mobile phone.

Vision Support Barrow and District will also be hosting a family fun day at Hawcoat Park on Tuesday May 30 where there will be dancing, rides, games, bouncy castles, and plenty of food stalls.

The money raised will allow the charity to continue providing support for people with visual impairments.

To spread awareness of the services they provide, Vision Support Barrow and District decided to get a pop-up stall in the market hall where they could sell tickets to their 100 prize raffle.

Vision Support Barrow and District are planning to have pop-up stalls elsewhere, including The Forum theatre and various supermarkets.

A spokesperson for Vision Support Barrow and District said: “Today, the Vision Support Centre provides a hub for people to access specialist support, learn more about visual impairments, and socialise.

“We’ve also campaigned extensively to ensure that people with visual impairments live independent lives, we recently went to Number 10 Downing Street to hand in a petition to keep guards on trains and ticket offices open.”
