THE community came together at a sold-out boxing event to raise funds for a Barrow toddler with a life-long condition.

Barrow Amateur Boxing Club (Barrow ABC) hosted its annual charity show earlier this month to help raise money for a local cause in the town.

The event is put together by boxing club head coach Jeff Moses who has been organising the annual show for the last 15 years.

This year two-year-old Mia-Amor was chosen as the fundraising recipient. The toddler was born with Dandy-Walker Syndrome – a rare congenital brain malformation involving the cerebellum and the fluid-filled spaces around it.

The condition affects just one in 10,000 children and Mia will need ongoing care and support to improve her quality of life.

The Barrow family have been taking on a 75-mile round trip from Barrow to Clitheroe for Mia’s care, forking out on therapy, travel and accommodation which is proving costly.

Jeff organised the boxing event to help raise much-needed funds towards Mia’s ongoing care.

And the family was elated after more than £7,000 – a Barrow ABC charity show record – was raised for Mia.

Jeff said: “The show went absolutely brilliantly. There were some good wins and we managed to raise £7,365 for Mia. That’s the most we have ever raised from a boxing show, we usually raise around £5,000 so we’re really chuffed with this year.

“Mia’s mum and dad were both there and are now in a position to move into a new house and put money towards a better lifestyle for Mia. The family was so grateful for everything we raised.

“Mia absolutely loved it – she loved the noise and cheering. Her family thought she could be a bit intimidated but she really enjoyed it.”

18 local boxers at all levels from 11 to 18 years old took part in the event, held on Sunday March 5 at Cloud Nine. All 21 tables were sold out within a week for the event.

The event has previously raised thousands for various causes in the area.

“The show itself was fantastic,” said Jeff. “The whole community really came together especially the Barrovians with the sponsorship we had.”

And plans are already in place for next year’s event.

“This is something we do every year to try and help a local cause and give 100 per cent of our proceedings to a good cause,” said Jeff.
