THE announcement that street cleaning services will be reinstated across the borough has been welcomed.

Following Barrow Borough Council’s decision to bring waste services back in house in October 2022, work has been underway to put together new street cleansing schedules to help tackle litter and to benefit the whole area.

From March 20, the move will include the reinstatement of a dedicated street cleaner for Dalton and Askam as part of the schedule which is designed to ensure the area has full coverage.

The move comes following renewed calls for a permanent street-cleaner in Dalton, after residents reported a rise in the amount of litter in the town.

Councillor Lee Roberts, the deputy leader of Barrow Borough Council, said the collections will help ensure people can take pride in the areas they live in.

He said: “Regular refuse collections are in place across the borough to help ensure people can take pride in the areas in which they live.

“In addition, we have reinstated the role of a dedicated street cleaner for Dalton and Askam. We know this was incredibly popular, well-received and appreciated by the whole community in the past and it’s something we’re pleased to be able to put back in place now.

“This borough is a fantastic place in which to live and work and it’s right that we should all be proud of it.  We would encourage everyone to dispose of litter in the correct way, recycle properly and to use our bulky waste collection for larger items to keep Barrow as clean and tidy as it can be.”

Barrow Borough Councillor for Dalton North Ben Shirley said he was ‘really pleased’ with the reinstatement of a street cleaner to the area.

He said: “I’m really pleased to be able to let you all know that, working together with councillors Daniel Edwards, Dave Taylor, the Dalton Community Action, Dalton Town Council, and Askam & Ireleth Parish Council, we have been successful in arguing for a street cleaner to return to our area, so that it always looks it’s best.

“Huge thanks also go to Marie in the street care team for putting in the hard work to make this happen.

“We hope the new street cleaner will begin work in our area in the coming weeks.”
