REVELLERS gathered at a Barrow rugby ground to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

The gates of Craven Park opened on Saturday for an Irish-themed entertainment event to start spring on a high.

From the number of online ticket sales the club was expecting to see at least a few hundred people, not to mention those who paid for entrance on the gate.

Inside the club grounds were two large marquees decorated with balloons and bunting, a bar full of drinks including Shamrock shots and Baby Guinness, food, seating and a stage.

The catering team was selling Irish stew with mash.

Live entertainment included a band, as well as a singer and a DJ to close the show until music went off at 11pm.

This year the club rented a larger marquee because of the great turnout last year. The organisers said that this was to create more dancing space so fewer people would get up on the tables this time.

Facilities managers Loraine and Paul Hunt said all proceeds from Paddyfest go towards the club. They also wanted to thank the maintenance team at Craven Park who volunteered to help set everything up in the rain.

Loraine said: “Last year it was brilliant and sunny. At least its dry today. There’s a great atmosphere and it's nice to see everyone having a good time.

Paul said: “It’s my third year as an organiser and I love it.

“We sorted everything from the staff to the decorations. The food and entertainment has been in the planning for months. We posted on Facebook to advertise the event and encouraged people to dress up and shared pictures of last year for inspiration.

“Raising funds is as important as everyone having a really good day. The club does a lot for the community, and brings people together.”

True to the green theme, people came dressed up in costumes and with face paint.
