A FUNDRAISING event that raised thousands and saw a performance from ‘The King’ in aid of a cancer charity was a huge success.

The event, organised by Beverley While, was held in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

The night saw a brilliant performance by Barrow Elvis impersonator John Halligan.

The 68-year-old, who has been impersonating Elvis for more than 20 years, has had his own personal journey with prostate cancer.

John was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2019 and within six weeks of diagnosis he underwent an operation.

The diagnosis has not prevented him from doing what he loves while helping other people with John performing as Elvis as a way of helping to raise funds for charity.

He said he gets 'quite emotional' when performing.

Mr Halligan performed at the fundraising event by Beverley, which took place at Barrow Wanderers Club House, earlier this month.

Mr Halligan said: “It was a great night and I would like to thank Bev and Barrow Wanderers, who donated £100 and raffle prizes, for organising it, all the people who bought tickets that couldn’t come, and the Fletch Day Magaluf charity, run by Barrow, Millom and Haverigg guys who donated £900.”

Organiser Beverley While said: “We raised in total £2,200; we had a marvellous night and lots of local businesses donated.

“The club and myself are thrilled over 60 people attended and we are looking forward to a repeat performance on April 30 at the Farmers Arms in Newbarns.”

Prostate Cancer UK said it was ‘so grateful’ for those who supported the event.

Nicola Tallett, director of fundraising and supporter engagement at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with one in eight getting diagnosed. We are so grateful for the dedication of Beverley, and all those who supported and her and helped her make her Elvis Tribute Nights, such fantastic successes.

“With the support of people like Beverley and so many others across the UK, Prostate Cancer UK is able to fund scientific research to stop this disease damaging the lives of men and their loved ones.

“Everyone who supports Prostate Cancer UK has their own story, some heart-breaking and others heart-warming, but all united with a common aim to see a world where men’s lives are not limited by prostate cancer. We thank Beverley for going that extra mile and joining us in our promise and commitment”.
