A community talk in Kendal will give people the chance to express their feelings about the climate and nature emergency.

Best-selling author, climate thinker, and Lancaster University professor Mike Berners-Lee will describe how we can stand up for a sustainable future.

The event, called ‘Act Together: How We Tackle the Climate Crisis’, is free and open to everyone, includes free vegan food before a talk on the climate emergency, followed by time for discussion in small groups.

The talk will take place at The Friends Meeting House, Stramongate, starting 6.30pm on Tuesday March 21.

‘Act Together’ is a chance to find out about a campaign to unite climate, nature, and community groups, and bring 100,000 people together outside Parliament in April this year.

‘The Big One’ campaign is calling on the Government to stop funding fossil fuels or granting new licences, but instead allow Citizens Assemblies of ordinary people to decide on a fair and sustainable transition to green energy.

Prof Berners-Lee, said: “These really are the make or break years now. The Anthropocene is the era in which we’ve transitioned from being a small species running around on a big robust playground of a planet, to a huge species on a very fragile small planet.”

“We can’t keep growing our carbon emissions. We have to shrink them like crazy. We should aspire to grow our biodiversity. We should aspire to grow the quality of life for all the people on the planet, and all the other species as well.

“If you get Citizens Assemblies together, just a hundred representative people from the UK and ask them to deliberate on the climate crisis, and put good information in front of them, they come up with really sensible suggestions.”

The professor, who also directs Small World Consulting, a world leader in carbon reduction and sustainability based at Lancaster University, encouraged people to come to the talk.

Organised by Extinction Rebellion South Lakes, two local residents will describe what action they are taking via their short testimonies.

People will have a chance to find out more about the roles they can play in the campaign - from taking part in street surveys to social media, lobbying, admin, playing music, creating art materials and more.
