EVEN the ‘Bells of Notre Dame’ would find it difficult to be heard above the applause for a local amateur theatre production.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the latest production from Abbey Musical Society to be performed at The Forum, Barrow.

Rehearsals for the play began in September with the cast attending rehearsals twice a week in preparation to blow audiences away.

The on-stage cast is made up of a 65 strong ensemble but including helpers there are 90 people involved in bringing this Disney classic to the stage.

“All the songs are from the film, it is the exact same soundtrack,” said Nick Collinge, chairman of the Abbey Musical Society.

“The highlights are the singing and the emotional rollercoaster of the story!”

Abbey Musical Society have previously brought shows such as Shrek the Musical, Cats and Little Shop of Horrors to the stage.

When asked why they wanted to perform the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Nick said: “The makeup of the show suited our group, in number of people and types of characters required for the parts.

“We also felt it would be a good title to perform, especially with the Disney angle.”

The show held its opening night on Monday, and has held and will continue to hold nightly performances until Saturday.

“The first night went really well,” said Nick. “The response has been amazing.”

Encouraging people to come along and support local theatre, Nick said: “All local theatre needs your support.

“We couldn’t exist without it so please support us all, as and when you are able to."

Tickets to the show cost £14 plus a booking fee.
