SOUTH Cumbria schools were among those affected by strike action taking place today and tomorrow.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) in England began two consecutive days of strike action today as part of our campaign to win a fully funded, above-inflation pay rise.

The South Cumbria schools affected by strike action today – confirmed by the NEU – included: Newbarns Primary School, Furness Academy, St Pius, Milnthorpe Primary School, UVHS and Church Walk Primary School.

Newbarns, Milnthorpe Primary School and St Pius Catholic Primary School will also be affected by the strikes tomorrow.

A national demonstration was held in London today which culminated in a rally at Trafalgar Square. This is the focal point for the first day of action, and more than 250 members from the Northern NEU region headed down to join it.

Beth Farhat, NEU Northern Regional Secretary said: “We do not want to go on strike – we want to be in the classroom, teaching and supporting children and young people. It continues to be a regret that our members have to take strike action, but we know that parents and the public understand the gravity of the situation around school funding and teacher recruitment and retention.

“The NEU, as we have always stated, is prepared to enter talks at any point. And, as and when through negotiation a reasonable offer from Government is made we will pause strike action while the offer is put to members. This is exactly what happened last week in Wales. Gillian Keegan needs to take a leaf out of the Welsh Government's book, stop playing politics and get down to serious negotiation.”

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said in an open letter to parents: "This industrial action will mean more disruption to children's education and to your lives too - whether that's work, arranging childcare or changing other plans.

"I am extremely disappointed that many young people will once again miss invaluable time learning with their teachers and friends, particularly after their education was significantly disrupted during the pandemic.

"It is made worse by the fact that this strike action is completely unnecessary. As I said to the NEU three weeks ago, I want to get around the table and engage in serious talks on teachers' pay and other issues to resolve disputes.”
