CHILDREN from a Barrow primary school were excited to be featured on a TV show as part of England Football’s #LetGirlsPlay initiative.

116 girls at Yarlside Academy, aged between three and 11, formed part of a 28,500 strong group of girls nationwide that took part in the initiative to try and get girls equal playing rights.

Yasmine Swarbrick, PE lead at the school, plays football for a lady’s team, but says that coming from Barrow it has always been ‘quite tough’ for girls to get into football.

“It’s nice to see that there are things being pushed for them,” said Miss Swarbrick.

“More girls are wanting to play, especially with Georgia Stanway being from Barrow, and have not had that opportunity.”

Miss Swarbrick pulled together footage of the girls taking part in the #LetGirlsPlay initiative at Yarlside School, in which one girl shared that Georgia Stanway was her inspiration for playing football.

She said: “Georgia Stanway has inspired me because she has come from Barrow.”

Another pupil said: “I like playing football because I like playing with my friends outside the school and helping people score their goals as well.”

Another said: “I like playing football because I like being active with my friends.”

The school was contacted by BBC One’s The One Show who had spotted footage from the school when browsing through hundreds of posts on Twitter.

The show featured some of the footage of pupils at Yarlside School during a video montage of girls across England getting involved with the initiative that coincided with International Women’s Day.

One clip used by the show was of one young Yarlside nursery pupil who is delighted to have scored herself a goal, giggling with glee as she runs back towards the camera to celebrate her victory while her friends give her a cheer.

Miss Swarbrick said: “We didn’t know which part of the video The One Show were going to use.

“But two of our girls were included in the video, one from nursery and one from year five.

“Quite a lot of our parents tuned in to watch it and family members of the children as well!”
