A SCHOOLGIRL is making a heartfelt gesture inspired by her friend and classmate’s cancer battle.

Newbarns Primary School pupil Faye Graham is taking on a charity challenge in honour of her friend who was diagnosed with leukeamia last year.

Through her classmate’s cancer journey, six-year-old Faye learnt about the illness and how treatment can result in the loss of your hair.

She then made the decision to cut her own hair off and donate it to the Little Princess Trust in the hope of helping other boys and girls experiencing cancer or other illnesses.

Dad Richie Graham said: “Faye got quite upset about her friend and she really was the inspiration behind all this.

“She had to wait for her hair to grow long enough to donate it because the Little Princess Trust would like the hair to be 12 inches or longer.

“It’s a great thing that Faye’s doing. Obviously hair grows back and it’s a wonderful thing to give this gift to another child.”

Faye’s family, who live in Barrow, have launched a fundraiser to help pay raise some cash for the charity.

BAE Systems worker Richie said: “For the Princess Trust to receive the hair and make it into a wig it costs £500 so we wanted to raise enough to pay for that.

“Faye wants to do it and raise the money but I don’t think she realises the impact this will have on somebody.

“As a parent, we’re so proud of her. You try and teach your kids to be kind and generous and help others when they can.

“She’s only six and is doing something quite tremendous.

“Her friends and teachers are all so proud of her. Everyone thinks it’s wonderful she wants to help others like this.”

Newbarns Primary and Nursery School also offered up praise to their kind-hearted pupil.

A spokesman said: “The Owls are very proud of their friend/class mate Faye who is having her hair cut to raise money and awareness of the Little Princess Trust.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or to other conditions such as Alopecia.

“Faye is going to be getting the majority of her hair cut because she wants ‘to donate it to help other boys and girls’.

“We are all so proud of her.”

Faye is due to get her haircut on Saturday March 25 at Blush & Co in Barrow.
