A TAKEAWAY has improved its food hygiene score after bosses were told to make dozens of immediate improvements

Deli.sh, on Crellin Street in Barrow, was handed a one-out-of-five rating in January but after another inspection on March 9 and 10 has now been bumped to four stars.

According to the report, sent by the takeaway to The Mail, three concerns were raised to the business.

Sam Halpin, manager of Deli.sh, said he was 'happy' after receiving the new score as they followed the steps and recommendations to make improvements.

As stated in the report:

  • There was evidence of food waste within the bowl of the handwash basin in the rear ground floor preparation room
  • Plastic-coated shelving within refrigerator located within rear preparation room requires cleaning
  • Storage shelving located within staff changing room is dirty and requires cleaning

The recommendations given were:

  • All open foods require to be stored in lidded containers
  • Walls and surfaces require cleaning and redecoration in several areas throughout the premises

Caragh McCullough, of Deli.sh, said: "There was a piece of diced onion in the hand wash sink from washing of hands after prepping.

"One of the shelves in one of the fridges had some food on it - the fridges get cleaned at the end of the day and everything in the fridge is covered.

"The shelving in the staff changing room upstairs has been removed.

"A packet of Demerara sugar had just been opened and not put in a lidded container yet - this is covered now as is everything else in the kitchen.

"The walls have a few scuff marks on them and require painting, which we will do.

"The shelving has now been removed from the staff room.

"The inspector would like us to use the sink in the disused kitchen upstairs solely for the washing of vegetables."

Caragh said the inspectors will come back in the next couple of months to inspect them again.

On January 25 the takeaway was given a one-out-of-five rating.

According to the report, obtained by The Mail under freedom of information laws, 39 concerns were raised to the business needing action in a week.

Kitchens were found 'very dirty with long-standing food debris and residues' and mould growth was spotted on one of the walls.
