THE family of a young mum who died from diabetes complications wants to give her a proper send-off.

Carrie Ann Speed, who grew up on Walney, died aged 34 from kidney failure as a result of her type-one diabetes without any life insurance.

The family has set up a gofundme to raise £1,000 towards her cremation costs.

Her older sister Claire Rennie is spearheading a fundraising mission to cover the funeral costs after her death in February.

She said Carrie Ann 'started by losing toes then her leg.'

"She also went into a coma, dialysis and then eventually her death," said Claire.

Carrie Ann's family want to give her a proper send-off but the family has no savings because her father has his own health issues and Carrie Ann, who grew up in Walney as one of six children, never took out life insurance.

"Carrie Ann's personality was bubbly but lacked a lot of social skills but she was a caring person once you got to know the real her," said Claire.

"At 23 she became a mum, she struggled with the responsibility of being a parent. She always struggled with her diabetes, dieting and its control.

"She never really understood the seriousness of the illness and its implications. She spent most of her adult life in and out of hospital with various diabetes-linked illnesses. Carrie Ann was very poor at budgeting with resources so had no finances when she died.

"She never had holidays or luxuries, food was probably her only luxury."

Despite how difficult the situation was for her, Carrie Ann remained a dedicated mother.

Claire said: "She never once stopped trying to be a good mum. She loved her daughter more than anything in life."

Claire said she wanted to give Carrie Ann a proper send-off.

"I feel like crying thinking about a funeral no-one can attend or is able to say that final farewell," she said.

"That's what gives us her family and more importantly her daughter that final closure. But never to be forgotten. Her daughter only ever wanted to sing her one final song at her funeral and at this moment that will never happen."
