A NEW ‘concept’ cafe championing art, wine and a friendly atmosphere has swung open its doors.

Ulverston has welcomed a new addition to its array of town centre businesses: Wa Concept.

The Market Square site operates as both a café and art gallery which also features an underground wine cellar.

Set across four floors, Wa Concept is a place for local artists to showcase their work in a warm and friendly environment, says owner Jennifer Ortega.

Hailing from Lake Garda in Italy, Jennifer opened Wa Concept nearly two weeks ago with her partner.

The couple, who previously worked in hospitality, decided to open their own business in Ulverston after falling in love with Cumbria.

“Ulverston was a really friendly place where we felt we could explore our ideas,” said Jennifer.

“It wasn’t a commercial place – it had identity and a great feeling which is what we wanted.

“We want people to come and hopefully share art and enjoy good quality wine and food.”

The pair wanted to open a café where customers could enjoy art, exhibitions with apperativos and great wine.

“We wanted a space where other artists could exhibit their work,” said Jennifer.

“We’re not just a café, we’re a concept. We want people to enjoy their time here in a relaxing way in a warm environment.”

Wa Concept also provides a space for functions and work events and can offer catering when booked.

The business also stocks a variety of different wine and produce sourced from Italy which is available to buy in store.

Jennifer has praised the warm welcome from customers and fellow business-owners since opening the shop in Ulverston.

She said: “The response we have had from people is that they really like it and say it’s a great atmosphere. It’s a different concept and something new to the town.”

Wa Concept is open from Wednesday to Sunday.
